Legendary soul singer Bettye LaVette “now rivals Aretha Franklin as her generation’s most vital soul singer,” claims The New York Times, and it’s easy to see why: a career four decades in the making, LaVette possesses a voice of incredible depth, expression, and strength. Though she recorded her first record at the age of 16, it was LaVette’s 2005 album I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise that catapulted her into soul stardom, paving the way for audiences everywhere to experience her amazing ability to make any song she covers her own.
In December 2009, Bettye LaVette proved to be the powerhouse performance of the evening at the Kennedy Center Honors when she sang her unparalleled version of “Love Reign O'er Me” as part of the Who tribute. She has also recently performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
