A “canny pop orchestra” with a “cosmopolitan air,” according to The New York Times, Pink Martini offers global music and vintage style. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world, this 12-member “little orchestra” crosses genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop into their highly-acclaimed, chic performances. “At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you’re in a French music hall of the 1930s,” says Pink Martini founder and pianist Thomas Lauderdale. “It’s a bit like an urban musical travelogue.”
In addition to Lauderdale, Pink Martini is led by talented vocalist China Forbes, who sings in English, French, Japanese, and Arabic. Classmates at Harvard, Forbes and Lauderdale would break into the lower common room in their college dormitory and sing arias by Puccini and Verdi – as well as an occasional Barbara Streisand cover – thus beginning their creative collaboration. Pink Martini has since sold over 2 million records, and their music has appeared in dozens of feature films, TV series, and commercials, including Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Hitch, “The Sopranos,” “The West Wing,” and “Desperate Housewives.”
