Called the “dean of Latin jazz” by The New York Times, Chucho Valdés remains one of Cuba’s most famous pianists, and an enduring figure in the world of jazz. Valdés’ illustrious, three-decade career began in 1972 with the founding of famous Latin jazz band Irakere. Since then, Valdés has earned 16 Grammy nominations, netting him six awards, including a 2009 Latin Grammy win for Juntos para Siempre.
“Spoken of in reverent terms throughout the international community of jazz musicians,” according to The Los Angeles Times, Chucho Valdés has recorded over eighty CD’s and performed with such jazz greats as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and Chick Corea. Valdés’ new project with the Afro-Cuban Messengers marks his first tour in the U.S. in seven years.
